Ella May Designs is named in honor of my maternal grandmother, Ella May. If the love of antique-hunting and furniture refinishing can be inherited than it is surely Ella May that shared that great part of herself with me. Grammie Ella, as my children call her, is the ultimate garage sale huntress. She is a dynamo at spotting a good bargain or a diamond in the rough. She gives items the TLC that they need and then sells them to her friend who owned an antique shop. I can remember going 'sale-ing' (which we have made an official verb) with her on Saturday mornings when I visited in the summer. Today in her 90s, she still hits the Saturday sales sometimes and can still spot a gem amongst a table of junk. I have inherited this same passion. It began as I decorated our family's home with antiques and vintage items. I love anything that has a story behind it. I love to know the provenance of a piece. I would rather having something old that has been loved by many families through the decades than a new piece from a factory overseas. In my hunting trips, I see so many beautiful old pieces that are in disrepair. I began purchasing these pieces and repairing, refinishing, and repainting them to give them a second life. While it began with items for my home, I started finding wonderful items that I had no need for but I had a vision for them. After much prayer and discussion with my family, I decided to open an antiques booth. I hope that one day in my 90s, I am still hunting for the gems like Ella May.
